Scaling and Root Planing Treatment

Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning below the gumline used to treat gum disease. Gum disease is caused by a sticky film of bacteria called plaque. Plaque is always forming on your teeth, but if they aren't cleaned well, the bacteria in plaque can cause your gums to become inflamed.

If you have gum disease, the gum pockets around the teeth will have deepened, thus allowing tartar deposits to form under the gum line. Your South Calgary Periodontal Hygienist will scale away any tartar and perform any necessary root planing at the same time.

Generally, deep cleaning will require more than one visit depending on the amount of scaling and planing required. An additional follow-up visit may be required to confirm that your gums and teeth are getting healthier and that the pocket depth has been reduced.

What is the difference between Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling - Scaling is used to remove the buildup of plaque and tartar. The surface of the tooth is cleaned, above and below the gum line. Dental instruments are used to brush off this buildup.

Root Planing - Scaling usually focuses on cleaning the surface. With root planing ( as the name says) it aims at cleaning the depth of the problem. It includes removing bacteria from the root of teeth and smoothing it. The root is where the bacteria caused due to build up can cause painful infection and inflammation. Thus, root planing’s objective will be to clear it.

Procedure for Scaling & Root Planing
  • 1. Anesthesia Administration: The dentist ensures a painless treatment by injecting a local anesthetic, which effectively numbs the targeted area and induces.

  • 2. Teeth scaling: Scaling involves manual or ultrasonic removal of stubborn deposits and plaque from the gum area, effectively completing the treatment for some individuals.

  • 3. Root planing: The procedure entails complete removal of the calcified cementum layer and thorough cleansing of the affected bones beneath the gum line, addressing the disease with precision.

  • 4. Post treatment: The dentist thoroughly flushes the area, effectively eliminating any lingering bacteria, and then applies gentle pressure to promote optimal gum development and ensure a healthy oral environment.
